Placebo or Theracurmin containing 180 mg\/day of curcumin was administered orally every day for 8 weeks. To monitor adverse events, blood biochemistry analyses were performed before and after 8 weeks of each intervention. The patients&#8217; knee symptoms were evaluated at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks by the Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure, the knee pain visual analog scale (VAS), the knee scoring system of the Japanese Orthopedic Association, and the need for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Results:<\/strong> <span>At 8 weeks after treatment initiation, knee pain VAS scores were significantly lower in the Theracurmin group than in the placebo group, except in the patients with initial VAS scores of 0.15 or less. Twenty-five patients with knee osteoarthritis randomly selected to Theracurmin intake (T) group and Theracurmin in combined with exercise (T+E) group. T group (n= 13) was taken orally a capsule of 700 mg, 3 times per day, (total 2,100 mg, 35 mg\/kg-body weight). T+E group (n= 12) performed aerobic training of 30-min walking and weight training for increasing leg muscular strength.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After treatment, the number of steps, muscle mass, range of motion of knee, and the muscle strength in flexion and extension significantly increased. The percent body fat, visual analogue scale, The Western Ontario and McMaster score, centers of pressure with closed eye, 10-m walking ability, stair ascending speed were significantly decreased after treatment. thus the present study investigated the hypothesis that curcumin ingestion would attenuate muscle damage after eccentric exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong class=\"sub-title\">Methods: <\/strong><span>Fourteen untrained young men (24 \u00b1 1 years) performed 50 maximal isokinetic (120\u00b0\/s) eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors of one arm on an isokinetic dynamometer and the same exercise with the other arm 4 weeks later. They took 150 mg of curcumin (theracurmin) or placebo (starch) orally before and 12 h after each eccentric exercise bout in a randomised, crossover design. Maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) torque of the elbow flexors, range of motion of the elbow joint, upper-arm circumference, muscle soreness, serum creatine kinase (CK) activity, and plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-\u03b1 (TNF-\u03b1) concentration were measured before, immediately after, and 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after each eccentric exercise. Changes in these variables over time were compared between curcumin and placebo conditions by two-way repeated measures ANOVA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong class=\"sub-title\">Results: <\/strong><span>MVC torque decreased smaller and recovered faster (e.g., 4 days post-exercise: -31 \u00b1 13 % vs. -15 \u00b1 15 %), and peak serum CK activity was smaller (peak: 7684 \u00b1 8959 IU\/L vs. 3398 \u00b1 3562 IU\/L) for curcumin than placebo condition (P &lt; 0.05).
